Norman is a world-class energy sector executive with 40 years of unique experience providing leadership to both the fusion energy and nuclear fission communities.
His experience includes a longstanding involvement with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). He served as CEO from 2006 to 2010, when he oversaw the groundbreaking research being conducted by the Joint European Torus (JET), the world’s largest fusion experiment and the only one operating using deuterium-tritium fuel, as it pushed the frontiers of fusion science. Norman later re-joined the UKAEA as a Non-Executive Director board member from 2016 until 2020. He remains a senior advisor to the UKAEA Board.
In previous roles he was the Director of the Dounreay site, as well as Heysham 1 and Sizewell B nuclear power stations in the United Kingdom. He has also served as a Trustee and Director of the Nuclear Liabilities Fund and the Deputy Chair of the Board of Governors at Manchester Metropolitan University.
In 2021, his services to the fusion and fission industries in the United Kingdom were recognized by the award of Commander of the British Empire (CBE).
Norman holds an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University and holds Fellowships with the Nuclear Institute, Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Society of Arts.
