COMPANY OVERVIEW

Fusion energy has the potential to transform how we energize the world and meet the growing global need for clean baseload power.

General Fusion is a leader in the fusion industry, developing uniquely practical Magnetized Target Fusion technology that addresses the key barriers to commercializing fusion technology.

Our world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business leaders has a proven culture of execution, with more than 20 years of experience designing, building, operating, and scaling test beds and prototypes. Today, General Fusion is one of only four private companies worldwide to have achieved and published meaningful peer-reviewed fusion results.

Today we are operating a world‑first, large‑scale Magnetized Target Fusion demonstration machine—Lawson Machine 26—and we are advancing toward important technical milestones—1 keV, 10 keV, and the Lawson criterion—which are critical steps toward delivering practical fusion energy within the next decade.

[For General Fusion’s approach, LM26 is designed to simultaneously demonstrate with hydrogen fuel the temperature, density, and energy confinement time that combined, represent the operating point of D-T plasma that satisfies the Lawson condition.]

LM26: Built and Operating
In 2025, our journey to deliver clean fusion energy to the world took a major leap forward when we began operating LM26, our large-scale Magnetized Target Fusion demonstration.

Magnetized Target Fusion Technology (MTF)

What sets General Fusion apart from the outset is our uniquely practical MTF approach with a liquid metal wall. Our technology was designed from the ground up with a power plant in mind.

By addressing key barriers such as material degradation, fuel production, energy capture, and cost, our approach offers a practical path without relying on expensive lasers or superconducting magnets.

The liquid metal wall:

  • Shields the fusion vessel from neutron activation.
  • Produces tritium fuel through neutron interactions with lithium.
  • Captures the energy produced by fusion efficiently. The liquid metal then circulates to a heat exchanger, producing steam to drive a turbine and generate clean electricity
