General Fusion to outline how fusion can play a key role in helping the nation meet its innovation and clean energy objectives
Burnaby, BC (November 28, 2016) — On Tuesday, November 29, General Fusion will address the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources, as Members of Parliament review Canada’s energy sector.
Michael Delage, Vice President Technology and Corporate Strategy for the innovative clean energy company based in Burnaby will answer a wide range of questions from MPs on the current state of nuclear energy in Canada, research and development and prospects for future technologies.
General Fusion is a leader in the development of fusion energy, and General Fusion sees the invitation as an opportunity to brief the government on the progress being made in Canada and around the world. “Clean fusion energy could play a key role in Canada’s future energy policy and help the world tackle climate change,” said Mr. Delage. “Our mission is to make sure that our political leaders understand fusion’s vast potential and how it fits into the picture of our energy future.”
General Fusion has collaborated with Canadian research leaders including the University of Alberta and University of Saskatchewan to produce a report called Fusion 2030: Roadmap for Canada, promoting the urgent need for a national fusion energy R&D program. Canada is unique among industrialized nations in not having a national fusion program. A well-defined national fusion program would become a catalyst for rapid innovation, high technology job creation and long-term strategic leadership.
Still in the research and development stage, fusion will play a prominent role in addressing the world’s future energy needs. Fusion is clean, producing no pollution or greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel is abundant. Fusion is also safe: the process cannot run away and produces no long-lived radioactive waste.
The invitation to speak to the House of Commons Standing Committee follows on an appearance by General Fusion before a committee of the US House of Representatives in 2015.
